Semantic Matching in the Context of Multilingual Resources (SMMS)

Rôle: Requérant(e) principal(e)

Financement: Fondation Hasler

Description du projet :

In an increasingly multilingual digital world, it is critical that information management tools support multiple natural languages’ simultaneous use and match. A prerequisite for this is that the underlying database engine has the ability to process multilingual data across languages seamlessly. However, most natural language processing-based techniques focus primarily on developing monolingual matching algorithms. These existing solutions often ignore the context knowledge and external domain-based sources, which leads to incomplete and inaccurate matching results in a multilingual environment. The goal of this project is to develop an adaptive ontology alignment method with two new dimensions, context knowledge and user involvement, to perform the matching in ontologies’ semantically-related entities. Our research results will fill the current lack of accurate semantics matching in a multilingual environment. This may be beneficial in both economic development and e-government services improvement, particularly in a country like Switzerland, which has four official languages.

Original Journalistic information label & traceability (TOJC) - IMI Initiative for Media Innovation
AGP

Rôle: Collaborateur/trice

Requérant(e)s: VS - Institut Informatique, Glassey Balet Nicole, VS - Institut Informatique

Financement: Initiative Media Innovation

AGP

Rôle: Collaborateur/trice

Requérant(e)s: VS - Institut Informatique, Jungius Christiane, VS - Institut Informatique

Financement: HES-SO Rectorat

Description du projet : Based upon the long term Swiss E-Government strategy (E-Government-Strategie Schweiz, 2007), several projects have been launched by the HES-SO to enable public administrations to use the benefits of BPM and increase their BPM maturity. The general acceptance and progress are perceptible, but important impulses have yet to be supplied. This project links directly to an existing project, the ech-bpm platform which was designed to enable public administrations to share and discuss their process models. It's main research goal is to find out, how and to what extent sample processes can be generated using existing BPMN models by analyzing their structure. This project aims at encouraging public administrations to use and adapt supplied sample processes to their specific needs thus harmonizing how tasks are handled in different communes. The second goal is to supply suitable methods for import and export of these models to different modeling tools. This research project facilitates the long term Swiss E-Government strategy. It strengthens the HES-SOs position as a leader in the field of business process management. It creates new options for collaborations with producers of modeling tools.

Crowdsourced map based mobile application for the wheelchair accessibility in Switzerland - ISNET 16-01
AGP

Rôle: Collaborateur/trice

Requérant(e)s: VS - Institut Informatique, Glassey Balet Nicole, VS - Institut Informatique

Financement: HES-SO Rectorat

AGP

Rôle: Collaborateur/trice

Requérant(e)s: VS - Institut Informatique

Financement: HES-SO Rectorat; VS - Institut Tourisme; VS - Institut Entrepreneuriat & MANAGEMENT

Semi-Automatic BP modeling approach - ES-ISNET13-02
AGP

Rôle: Collaborateur/trice

Financement: HES-SO Rectorat; VS - Institut Informatique; TI Informatique

In an increasingly multilingual digital world, information management tools must support the simultaneous use and matching of multiple natural languages. A prerequisite for this is that the underlying database engine seamlessly processes multilingual data across languages. However, most natural language processing-based techniques have focused on developing monolingual matching algorithms, often ignoring context knowledge and external domain-based sources, which lead to incomplete and inaccurate matching results in a multilingual environment. The purpose of this study is to propose an adaptive semantic matching method with context knowledge and user involvement as two new dimensions for matching the semantically related entities ontologies. We present a comprehensive evaluation of our solution by applying it in a multilingual e-commerce platform case study, which performed well on matching accuracy.

Résumé:

Trust has long been considered an important factor that affects the relation between people and news. However, with the increasing amount of information online, as well as new digital tools and services, this relation has changed, everyone can create content, anytime and anywhere. Therefore, being able to identify and distinguish reliable sources of information online becomes a challenge for the public. In this paper, we focus on providing a digital labelling solution for journalistic contents to enhance the readers’ trust in the media by using design science method. Focus group interviews were conducted to examine reader’s trust perceptions in news contents and their opinions on the trust labelling mechanism. Discussion results helped us to build a list of trust indicators which were used in our labelling distribution system for news content evaluation. Finally, we designed and developed an intermedia certification system to distribute the labelling on trust news contents. Obtained evaluation results confirmed the utility of our system and provided support to readers in identification of the reliable news content.

Résumé:

Public trust in health information is essential to ensure that preventative strategies to reduce the transmission of COVID-19 are accepted and followed. This study explored the way Swiss people accessed and consumed news and information about the coronavirus from different channels, and the role media plays in public trust during the pandemic. Based on a study of 442 randomly assigned participants in French-speaking regions, we examined the following four questions: (1) What are the news sources and platforms and how are they used? (2) How does the public rate the trustworthiness of these sources and platforms? (3) To what extent does the public perceive that these sources and platforms are provided inaccurate information? (4) What roles do these sources and platforms play in the pandemic? Implications are discussed in the conclusion based on our findings.

Résumé:

The availability of global and scalable tools to assess disabled pedestrian level of service (DPLoS) is a real need, yet still a challenge in today's world. This is due to the lack of tools that can ease the measurement of a level of service adapted to disabled people, and also to the limitation concerns about the availability of information regarding the existing level of service, especially in real time. This paper describes preliminary results to progress on those needs. It also includes a design for a navigation tool that can help a disabled person move around a city by suggesting the most adapted routes according to the person's disabilities. The main topics are how to use advanced computer vision technologies, and how to benefit from the prevalence of handheld devices. Our approach intends to show how crowdsourcing techniques can improve data quality by gathering and combining up-to-date data with valuable field observations.

Résumé:

In recent years, Sina Weibo, a Twitter-like social network service in China, has attracted attention from scholars in the domain of information systems, as the spread and influence of users’ opinions are increasingly important, particularly in the tourism industry. This study examined the behaviors of Chinese tourists in Switzerland by adopting a semantic-based linked data methodology. A total of 103,778 Weibo messages shared with Swiss locations were collected between January 2013 and April 2015. We addressed questions about Chinese travelers’ profiles, trends in keywords, and differences between first time and repeat visitors. Moreover, we implemented a semantic search engine by employing linked data technologies to provide useful information about Chinese tourists in Switzerland, both for the tourism industry and individual tourists.

Résumé:

The last few years have witnessed an explosive growth in the use of smartphones. Such widespread use brings with it concerns over the protection of privacy. Building upon existing privacy concern literature, this study has developed a theoretical framework that combines privacy calculus model with a technology acceptance model (TAM) in the mobile application context. Also examined is the role of personalized services and users’ perceived information control in this domain. Based on a study of 308 participants, the results reveal that perceived enjoyment has replaced perceived ease-of-use as a main predictor of perceived behavioral intentions in a mobile TAM. The findings also showed that personalized services and users’ perceived information control have a strong effect on both privacy calculus and mobile TAM.

Résumé:

Over the past decade, mobile devices such as smartphones have become increasingly common as a form of handheld computing platform. The use of mobile applications on these mobile devices is experiencing unprecedented rates of growth. However, when using mobile applications, users are often requested to give context information. Such requests have led to growing privacy concerns. This paper proposes the use of context-awareness to improve single sign-on (SSO) solutions so that mobile users can protect their private information. A privacy-based adaptive SSO (ASSO) may be able to increase users’ perceived ease of use of the system and give service providers the necessary authentication security for their applications. The study was based on data gathered from 168 participants as part of the Lausanne Data Collection Campaign. This was led by the Nokia research center in Switzerland and used Nokia N95 phones. The analysis of SVM showed our expectations to be correct. Consequently, a new business model for mobile platforms has been proposed to reinforce our claim that privacy-friendly value propositions are possible and can be used to obtain a competitive advantage.

Résumé:

Switzerland is one of the most desirable European destinations for Chinese tourists; therefore, a better understanding of Chinese tourists is essential for successful business practices. In China, the largest and leading social media platform—Sina Weibo, a hybrid of Twitter and Facebook—has more than 600 million users. Weibo’s great market penetration suggests that tourism operators and markets need to understand how to build effective and sustainable communications on Chinese social media platforms. In order to offer a better decision support platform to tourism destination managers as well as Chinese tourists, we proposed a framework using linked data on Sina Weibo. Linked Data is a term referring to using the Internet to connect related data. We will show how it can be used and how ontology can be designed to include the users’ context (e.g., GPS locations). Our framework will provide a good theoretical foundation for further understand Chinese tourists’ expectation, experiences, behaviors and new trends in Switzerland.

Résumé:

This study presents an innovative approach to evaluating media representations of gender-based violence by integrating Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques with the advanced capabilities of GPT-4, an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based large language model. We developed a set of 27 expert-defined criteria to analyze a corpus of news articles, initially utilizing NLP methods for foundational text analysis. For more complex criteria, we employed GPT-4 and further enhanced its precision with fine-tuning. Our results indicate a significant increase in accuracy, achieving an overall 76% accuracy rate in content evaluation, which is 9% points higher than using NLP alone. This research introduces a novel media content analysis framework and paves the way for future enhancements in automated journalism assessment and ethical reporting.

Résumé:

n a research project dedicated to learning instruments for new learners , we asked students to express their revising process for examination. We asked 105 academic students, in groups of 3-4 people, to work on designing a common way for revision. We generalized the results in a workflow, which shows that redoing exercises is the most frequently activity mentioned and takes place before revising the theory. The second process consists in making a revision summary collectively. When at the end of the session students had to answer a survey question: "How are group revisions for exams carried out?", 28 groups out of 33 put forward the notion of collaborative revision (exchanging notes, asking each other questions and redoing the exercises, remotely or not). Intuitively, we had imagined that the students would start the revision process by producing the summaries before carrying out the exercises, moving from theory to practice, and will revise individually. The opposite occurs. This can help both students and teachers by showing the average revision process, which is generally unexpressed, and emphasizing the value of the collective and the effective place of theoretical concepts in learning.

Résumé:

The purpose of this study is to investigate how big data analytics technology affects decision-making in the media industry, with a focus on digital newspapers. To achieve this goal, we propose a decision-making model to identify the relationship between audiences and news topics using big data analysis and classification, intending to help news practitioners optimize their marketing strategies. To evaluate our model, we conducted a case study using a Swiss local newspaper. Preliminary results indicate that audience reading time and volume have been significantly increased after implementing the decision that based on the model’s analysis. The study also provides some guidelines for editors and journalists to target their digital news content.

Résumé:

The rapid outbreak of COVID-19 has heightened interest in news about the pandemic. In addition to obtaining real-time developments about COVID-19, people have learned about prevention methods through the news media. Ironically, false COVID-19 news has spread faster than the virus, posing an additional health threat with advice being as dangerous as infection. In this study, we developed a Chinese news article dataset on COVID-19 misinformation, which contained 1266 verified articles from 118 Chinese digital newspaper platforms from January 2020 to January 2021. This dataset uses machine learning methods to detect false news in the Chinese language. Because automated classification methods, combined with human computation-based approaches, are effective for combating digital misinformation, we applied and evaluated a collaborative intelligence approach that leverages human fact-checking skills with feedback on news stories using four criteria: source, author, message, and spelling. The results show that reliable human feedback can help detect false news with high accuracy.

Résumé:

The topic of deceptive and satiric news has drawn attention from both the public and the academic community, as such misinformation has the potential to have extremely adverse effects on individuals and society. Detecting false and satiric news automatically is a challenging problem in deception detection, and it has tremendous real-word political and social influences. In this paper, we contribute a useful French satiric dataset to the research community and provide a satiric news detection system using machine learning to automate classifications significantly. In addition, we present the preliminary results of our research designed to discriminate real news from satiric stories, and thus ultimately reduce false and satiric news distribution.

Crowdsourcing, as one of the most promising tech-niques for distributed problem-solving, requires sustained human involvement. Therefore, it also brings new challenges to data management, fundamentally data input and its quality. In this paper, we looked at various forms of user motivations and quality control of crowdsourcing when building accessibility maps mobile applications. We discuss how motivations could be used to contribute to our accessibility maps scenarios, and how data can be improved for two types of participants: individual participants and organization participants. We identified three useful techniques for improving data quality: qualification-based, reputation-based, and aggregation-based. In addition, based on our own mobile application (named WEMAP), we evaluated our approaches through focus group discussions and in-depth interviews.

Crowdsourcing, or asking for general participation to help contribute to shared goals, has become popular in the cultural heritage domain. However, it also brings new challenges to data quality management. In this paper, we describe a novel approach that used selective crowdsourcing to increase quality control and the number of participants when collecting cultural heritage-related data. We tested our approach in scenarios using a mobile application for cultural heritage travellers. The results showed that the selective crowdsourcing approach can be applied well to complete information and resolve conflict in cultural heritage data.

Creating an optimal travel plan is not an easy task, particularly for people with mobility disabilities, for whom even simple trips, such as eating out in a restaurant, can be extremely difficult. Many of their travel plans need to be made days or even months in advance, including the route and time of day to travel. These plans must take into account ways in which to navigate the area, as well as the most suitable means of transportation. In response to these challenges, this study was designed to develop a solution that used linked data technologies in the domains of tourism services and e-governance to build a smart city application for wheelchair accessibility. This smart phone application provides useful travel information to enable those with mobility disabilities to travel more easily.

Résumé:

The travel and tourism industry is flourishing worldwide. It is vital for tourism-related supplier and markers to understand tourist traits in order to target tourism consumers and further assist decision makings. With the development of social networks, tourists published large quantities of travel experiences on social networks where they disclose their traits explicitly and implicitly. In this paper, we design a methodology for tourism traits analysis based on social networks, which includes three components: tourist demographic analysis, tourist social influences analysis, and tourist behavior analysis. Sina Weibo based Chinese tourists in Switzerland analysis is as a case study for our methodology, and different findings are obtained. Those findings are beneficial to tourism-related suppliers and markers to make valuable strategies. And our proposed methodology could be applied to analyze tourist traits in any social network platform.

Building government services with an interconnected administration approach is a worldwide trend aimed to solve the complexity of government-related processes. The connection between people and services relies on technical tools that could benefit from improvements at the data level, by more easily sharing and having a better interlinking of data from different sources. Linked data technologies have been developed to fulfill this universal need at the World Wide Web scale, and evolve it into a web of data. In this study, we move along the data lifecycle from linked data access onto its consumption and up to the design of end-users applications. As technologies for linked data publication are already at an advanced stage, we focus on the features needed for linked data consumption and present the framework we implemented in the “OverLOD Surfer” project. We apply the solution to our former work in eGovernment and semantic business process management to strengthen our assertion that the web of data approach is effective in supporting the realization of applications for an interconnected administration.

Résumé:

Linked open data has been described by scholars as the logic evolution and the main benefit of open data. Nonetheless, the cost of data integration and platform management cannot be simply covered by selling the data, which is freely available by definition. Moreover, existing classifications of business models for linked open data platforms are rather descriptive instead of being prescriptive, and they do not take into account the notion of economic sustainability. Hence, this paper extends the existing literature in order to understand how to define a value proposition and a revenue model to increase the adoption of linked open data. We have developed a simple typology and we have identified a new revenue model for a linked open data platform, which is currently being tested.
