Summary:

As part of the ACTOR project (Analysis, Creation and Teaching of Orchestration), the Composer-performer Orchestration Research Ensembles (CORE), established in several member institutions, aim, over the course of three research-creation rounds, to document and analyze the creative process of composition in a collaborative context where all the actors – composers and performers, are brought together throughout the development of new musical works, from the seed ideas that precede the first sketches to the final concert, including the writing period. This article focuses on observing the interactions at play within CORE during rounds 1 and 2 conducted at McGill University and seeks to show how they contrast with the hierarchy between composer, conductor and instrumentalists, usually in place since the end of the eighteenth century in the field of conducted ensemble music. We also take an interest in the relationship professor - student, which are intended to be less top-down in CORE than in the traditional pedagogy of written classical music. Finally, the article seeks to show how CORE tends to promote the figure of the interpreter-researcher, developing for several decades in the field of solo music, but embryonic in the domain of directed ensembles.
