Résumé:

This study explores the increasingly important online dimension of entrepreneurial ecosystems (EEs), an area that has received little research attention despite its increasing relevance in today’s digital world. Focusing on the context of a university incubator, we aim to understand how integrating online elements into entrepreneurship support affects new venture development. Through semistructured interviews with entrepreneurs, our findings indicate that online elements facilitate access to vital resources and networks, yet they can also create new challenges related to diminished interpersonal interactions. This research provides insights for practitioners and policy makers, suggesting that effective support for entrepreneurship should balance online engagement with opportunities for personal connection. This study extends the discussion on the virtualization and digitalization of EEs and its implications for fostering entrepreneurial growth and ecosystem resilience.

Résumé:

This study explores the impact of the Swiss entrepreneurial ecosystem (EEs) on women entrepreneurs in STEM fields. Through semi-structured interviews with 13 female founders in Switzerland, it identifies the factors that enable and constrain their entrepreneurial activities. In the pre-foundation (inception) phase, a lack of entrepreneurial intention was influenced by the social and cultural environment. However, market demand, opportunity recognition, co-founder(s), family support, and escaping corporate constraints catalyzed venture creation. During the implementation phase, which includes successful establishment and growth (celebration), the founders acknowledged both the benefits and drawbacks of the ecosystem. Initial support was substantial, especially for spin-offs, but diminished as ventures matured. The study emphasizes the need for tailored support mechanisms for women in STEM and highlights the importance of a more inclusive and effective EE. The proposed conceptual framework offers insights into adapting EEs to better support underrepresented groups and promote diversity in innovative entrepreneurship.

Lien vers la conférence

Résumé:

In the field of entrepreneurship, storytelling and legitimacy play a fundamental role. While previous studies have explored the various facets of narratives in entrepreneurial ventures, this study focuses on how entrepreneurs use problem-telling as a strategic communication tool to enhance the legitimacy of the venture. Using a qualitative approach, we aim to uncover the strategies used by entrepreneurs to create effective narratives about challenging events and problems they encounter. This study contributes to a comprehensive understanding of legitimacy building in entrepreneurship and sheds light on the dynamic nature of problem-telling under uncertainty, offering valuable insights for entrepreneurs seeking to engage stakeholders and foster future growth through the strategic use of narratives.

insights on internationalization, innovativeness, and green practices in SMEs

Tatyana Tsukanova

Journal of the International Council for Small Business

Lien vers la conférence

Résumé:

Most of the literature on the internationalization of SMEs has focused on the determinants of their international expansion or the impact of international operations on business performance. This study offers a perspective on the extent to which exporting SMEs are able to leverage their external environment and innovation efforts to build more sustainable businesses in line with today’s stakeholder expectations. Drawing on institutional theory, sustainability, and ambidexterity literature, the study suggests that SMEs with a higher degree of international operations and active involvement in innovations are more likely to adopt more green practices. Furthermore, a more detailed picture of the role of innovation efforts in this complex mechanism is provided. The study highlights the importance of internationalization and innovation for implementing more sustainable practices in SMEs and offers implications for practitioners and policymakers.
