Résumé:

Background: A firm’s cooperative strategies are a fundamental issue in the search for business growth avenues, but a system that eases the emergence of coupled open innovation appears to be missing. Objectives: This paper describes a business networking tool to foster coupled open innovation emergence. Methods/Approach: We adopted a methodology based on design science comparable to grounded theory because solutions emerged by testing a design artefact with companies. Results: We designed and tested an artefact designed as a game to encourage participants to meet as many partners as possible. It is based on collaborative innovation mechanisms and gets inspiration from fields such as organization design, service design, and prospective design. The proposed artefact comes as prescriptive rules that support managers' open innovation opportunity elicitation. Conclusions: From a practical point of view, we contribute by helping companies find emergent open innovation opportunities. From a theoretical point of view, this artefact is part of an emergent theory of object-oriented coupled open innovation mechanisms.

Résumé:

Worldwide, more than one billion people live with disabilities. People with disabilities (PWD) have needs in terms of autonomy, social participation and inclusion. Mobility is one condition for them to be included in society and participate in social life. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) can be part of the concept of Mobility as a Service (MaaS) that enables us to rethink the policy of mobility. However, the way these new autonomous mobility services are designed could exclude PWD. To prevent that, universal design principles and inclusive design could help policymakers and public transport companies design new means of transport that are accessible to all. However, perceptions of PWD regarding MaaS in general and AVs are not well documented. This article presents qualitative research about these perceptions. Eight semi-directive interviews were thus carried out on the subject. Based on these findings, we developed an integrative model to accompany and orchestrate such AV design developments. This integrative model will help policymakers and public transport companies rethink mobility concepts while incorporating AVs and make them accessible to ensure the social inclusion of PWD.

Résumé:

Blockchain is often presented in the tourism industry as being a technology in a global approach that will enable the sector to make its digital transformation and bring a whole series of advantages, both financial and logistical. The reality is different, however. Indeed, research on Blockchain tends to focus on essentially technical aspects and takes little account of the customer experience in the sector in which it will be integrated. The aim of this exploratory research, based on 18 semi-directive interviews, is to understand the sociological obstacles to the adoption of Blockchain by tourism professionals in Switzerland. Our generalized findings are presented in the form of four research proposals that argue that, without the intervention of the State, it is hard to see how such disruptive innovation can radically change the highly fragmented tourism sector.

Switzerland disposes of a large number of inventories listing valuable landscapes and tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Although many tourists increasingly long for authentic experiences including the nature and the culture of the holiday region, tourism destinations only partially validate the natural and cultural heritage listed in those manifold inventories. However, there are already some interesting examples of offers including objects from the federal inventory of the historic routes of Switzerland or the federal inventory of landscapes and natural monuments of national importance. The existing inventories in Switzerland have a very rich potential to develop innovative and attractive offers for a sustainable tourism and it seems to be of particular importance to present the potential and some good examples in the present article.

Enterprise-related social capital as a driver of firm growth in the periphery?

Résumé:

Social capital plays an important role in firm competitiveness and firms located in peripheral regions may benefit from different types of social capital such as that gained from contacts to other business partners (production-related) or that gained from contacts with external actors like policymakers and politicians (environment-related). We investigate production-related and environment-related social capital of firms located in Swiss peripheral regions and fill a research gap by empirically testing the influence of those two types of social capital on firm performance. Using a unique matched dataset (survey data and register data), we investigate if and how different kinds of networks, and their geography, influence firm growth in peripheral regions. We find that environment-related social capital has, in most cases, positive effects on firm growth. This holds especially for extra-regional social capital. For production-related social capital, however, a positive effect is only significant for geographically proximate clients and suppliers. Consequently, conclusions about what drives firm growth in the periphery have to be nuanced and need to encompass different approaches and explanations.

The tourism industry is facing many challenges, including reducing the ecological impact of its activities. To adapt to it, some tourism destination stakeholders have undertaken actions that increase the resilience of the local tourism ecosystem by reducing resource consumption, while satisfying the demand expressed by their customers to consume more sustainable tourism offers. As tourism is systemic by nature, researchers used principles of circular economy (CE) to identify potential improvements in two close tourism destinations in Switzerland: Crans-Montana and Pfyn-Finges. In this paper, we present on the one hand, the method of elicitation of best practices we followed, and on the other hand, an important step in our research regarding the analysis of the type of resources shared between actors (e.g. material, HR, information) as well as the role of the different actors involved along the tourism value chain. A benchmark of the best practices of EC at the international level allows us to highlight the main material flows exchanged between the tourism value chain and its related industries.

Résumé:

The development of smart cities has brought enormous benefits for the improvement of services such as transport, energy, online public services and the monitoring of their use. At the same time, in the context of tourism, the concept of smart destinations also offers advantages in mountain resorts, for example by facilitating customer journeys of tourists who discover the region, by enhancing their stay through the use of smart technology and by providing them with accurate and tailored information. However, it seems that only the very highend mountain destinations have benefited from these advantages. Indeed, becoming an intelligent destination requires significant investment, digital expertise and a culture of innovation. In this research, we are looking at small, lesser-known Swiss mountain destinations for which going "smart" is currently challenging. In this article, we present a new tool for diagnosing "smart" maturity which, thanks to information and communication technologies, enables us to focus above all on the weak links that significantly affect the customers' journeys (e.g. missing the last shuttle after skiing in order to be able to return to their hotel). Applying this tool will enable such destinations to identify ways to become a smart destination that are adapted to their scale and characteristics and that will allow them to remain competitive towards more established and larger destinations.

Résumé:

In this paper, we describe a business networking tool aiming at fostering collaborative innovation emergence between actors. This tool is designed as a game to encourage participants to share and meet as many partners as possible in a given time. This artefact is based on previous research aiming at identifying collaborative innovation mechanisms and getting inspiration from different fields such as organization design, service design and prospective. The proposed artifact comes as a set of prescriptive rules (Van Aken, 2005) that support managers' co-innovation opportunity elicitation. In preliminary test, 30 exchanges emerged among 20 participants, who did not know each other beforehand. Our contribution is twofold: from a practical point of view, we contribute to help companies to find emergent co-innovation opportunities; and from a theoretical point of view, this artefact is part of our emergent theory of object-oriented co-innovation mechanisms.

Résumé:

In the mobility sector, a large number of new technologies such as autonomous vehicles (AVs) and services (e.g. carpooling) are emerging. AVs involve not only passengers, but also authorities, manufacturers, public transportation companies, law enforcement officials, drivers, pedestrians and shopkeepers. Applying phenomenology - the description of a phenomenon's live experience [1] - to this case of Mobility as a Service (MaaS) contributes to understanding its complexity and provides insights of users' perception of risk related to the AVs. This new technology brings many opportunities to improve our mobility system. Identified potential risks can affect the efficiency and the perception of the service. In this exploratory research, we have employed a technique called experimental phenomenology to identify these risks. The major advantage of this approach is to take into account the perception of passengers as a driver for design.

Résumé:

The present paper deals with the potential of autonomous public vehicles for alpine tourism destinations. Several scholars have underlined the dilemma between tourism and mobility, especially in peripheral tourism regions. On the one hand, there is a high demand for mobility, on the other hand, those regions are ecologically very sensitive and their pure air, natural beauty and tranquillity are their most important assets. Scientific literature has concentrated on possible management measures that help handle that dilemma and their impact on tourist flows. There is however a lack of literature dealing with the potential of autonomous public vehicles to render a tourism destination more sustainable and attractive for tourists from a mobility point of view. The aim of this exploratory study is to investigate the chances and opportunities of public autonomous vehicles for alpine tourism destinations. The study also focuses on the elements that could hinder a tourism destination to adopt a public autonomous vehicle. The in-depth analysis of 14 expert interviews shows that the introduction of autonomous public vehicles in alpine tourism destinations could be a starting point for the development of a sustainable transport system. Yet, the technological and legal aspects still have to be developed more.
