Role: Co-applicant

Financement: Réseau santé sarine

Description du projet :

Role: Co-applicant

Financement: HES-SO Fonds stratégique

Description du projet :

Summary:

End-of-life (EoL) planning and the drafting of advance care directives (ACD) are challenging for older adults. As part of a mixed study, the content of 18 semi-structured interviews with Swiss community-dwelling older adults was analyzed to investigate contextual and interactional aspects that might influence their choice to complete ACD. Results show that EoL planning vary greatly. Three types of planners were highlighted: the solo planners, the collaborative planners, and the delegators. Each represents a specific way of conceiving autonomy, the usefulness of ACD and of involving third parties in the decision-making process. Whereas for solo planners, ACD is a personal, rational affair, for collaborative planners and delegators, reflection and decisions on EoL issues are interactional and iterative processes. The results suggest that health and social care professionals would benefit from taking into consideration the various types of planning, in order to provide the best support to older adults for ACD completion.

Summary:

This study examines the extent to which career competencies (knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to manage one’s own work and learning experiences to achieve the desired career progression) are prevalent amongst early career researchers (ECRs). We adapted the Career Competencies Questionnaire [Akkermans, J., Brenninkmeijer, V., Huibers, H., & Blonk, R. W. (2013). Competencies for the contemporary career: Development and preliminary validation of the career competencies questionnaire. Journal of Career Development, 40(3), 245–267] to ECRs’ training and career specificities, considering the two career tracks facing them: within and outside academia. This questionnaire was sent to PhD students and junior PhD holders in 16 countries (n = 727). Our results show that career competencies for within and outside academia are clearly contrasted. Furthermore, compared with their female counterparts, male participants generally reported stronger career competencies in preparation for careers both within and outside academia, while PhD students perceived having more career competencies in preparation for careers outside academia than PhD holders did. We also found a positive link between ECRs’ career competencies and their perceived employability, and those who perceived themselves as having strong career competencies were more likely to consider their current work meaningful. While most PhD holders pursue careers beyond academia, the concept of career competencies offers an innovative theoretical contribution to the field of ECRs’ development, by highlighting how this population perceives their preparedness for diverse professional paths.

Summary:

This article contributes to scientific discussion with regard to the interplay of individual and social factors on end-of-life decisions. Semi-directed interviews (N ¼ 18) with people over 65 years highlighted two different but articulated fears in relation to end-of-life care: on one hand, older adults fear not being allowed to die and being subjected to therapeutic obstinacy; on the other, they fear not being cared for properly, due to their age and a lack of financial resources in the health and social care system. Recommendations are given to assist professionals in discussing these fears with the people concerned and their families.

Summary:

Summary:

Precariousness profile and career adaptability as determinants of job insecurity :

a three-wave study

Link to the publication

Summary:

The present study compares the mean levels and growth in job insecurity across employees’ precariousness profiles as defined by a combination of perceived employability and financial difficulties. Drawing on the labor market precariousness and workplace stress literature, we hypothesized that employees with the most precarious profile would report elevated levels of job insecurity followed by a growth trend. Moreover, career adaptability was expected to act as a resource for counteracting job insecurity. The study was based on three waves of a longitudinal “Professional Paths” survey (National Centre of Competence in Research LIVES) conducted in Switzerland. The data of 799 professionally active adults were analyzed using latent growth modeling. In line with our hypothesis, the findings showed the highest levels of job insecurity and the most pronounced growth trend among employees with the precarious profile. Interestingly, different career adaptability facets played differing roles in predicting job insecurity, potentially revealing some of its under-researched aspects.

Religiosity and the wish of older adults for physician-assisted suicide

Summary:

In industrialized countries, population ageing is associated with intense discussions on the issue of dying with dignity. Some countries have legalized assisted suicide and authorized physicians to provide the knowledge and/or means for suffering patients to end their life. The goal of this study was to ascertain if religiosity could be a predicting factor of older adults’ wish for physician-assisted suicide (PAS). A sample of 216 men and women over 60 years (M = 72.5) answered the following question: “Would you disagree or agree with assisted suicide for yourself if you were very sick and would die in the near future?” They also completed questionnaires on religiosity, ageism and death anxiety. A regression analysis showed that religiosity explained a significant (F(1211) = 19.62; p < 0.001) proportion (7.7%) of the variance in the wish for PAS (full model R2 = 0.17). Religiosity seems to reduce the likelihood that older adults would ask for PAS if they had a terminal illness, while ageism and death anxiety seemed to have the opposite effect. Health professionals and legislators must be aware that psychosocial and spiritual variables have an important influence on the wish for PAS.

Summary:

The PersonAge VR project has the two-folded goal of using Virtual Reality (VR) and interactive storytelling to divulge the research and knowledge in the field of ageism and, in the process, to raise awareness about ageism in the population. The system we conceived and developed allows experiencing ageism under three different points of view: the victim, the perpetrator, and the witness. We performed preliminary usability tests (formative usability) with 8 participants from the point of view of the victim. The system was found to be easy to use and the participants provided feedback about the emotions felt when playing the role of an elderly person. The participants felt strong anger and surprise. These feelings could be associated with a situation of discrimination.
