Summary:

The Senior Living Lab has run a number of participatory workshops with seniors with a view to brainstorming and developing products and services to improve the quality of life of ageing populations in Switzerland. This project aims to combine and adapt design thinking and living lab methodologies to be suitable with elderly participants. It gathers various qualitative techniques and deploys an interdisciplinary methodology based on community-based participatory research. This living lab project highlights the key success factors and the challenges in order to successfully involve seniors during complex innovation processes, such as time essential to tackle logistic issues and the ability to adapt participatory initiatives to an elderly public.

Summary:

Design is a value-creating process that encourages innovation in companies. Despite the obvious, many SMEs have difficulty integrating such practices into their businesses. Indeed, design is a concept with multiple facets, whose implementation remains abstract. This article addresses the following question : How might one characterize design management practices in SMEs and how might opportunities for improvement be identified ? In answer to this, we have developed a tool that allows for the identification of the level of design integration in a firm according to different levers. The research was carried out in three SMEs and one start-up firm. The mapping allowed for the identification of five levers of design management, which enable one to see what current practices are and opens the path for dialogue with the parties involved. Following the analysis, the creation of tools that correspond to the different levels of integration will favor the successful implementation of design management practices in the company concerned.

Summary:

This paper looks at the use of design practices in start-up firms for the creation of strategic advantage through product/service innovation. Start-ups face non-negligible challenges during the early-stage of development. The research questions examined to what extent design practices can provide the leverage needed to face these challenges. A 4-day Innovation by Design Challenge workshop provided the field for the research carried out. Participants were start-up firms each working together with two designers to form six teams. Methods used included: observation for the mapping of team activities; a short self-report questionnaire and; pre- and post-workshop semi-directed interviews with the start-ups. The findings support the idea that design practice integration into the initial development of a start-up can indeed provide a lever for success and provide the start-up with the strategic vision needed to go through the early-stage and bring their products/services to market successfully.

Summary:

Design is a value-creating approach that provides a competitive advantage and fosters innovation within organisations. Indeed, many companies still struggle to integrate design into their practices and few design support programmes are available in Switzerland. Given this context, we address the following question: How can a design support workshop impact the design awareness of Swiss start-up managers? We have created a design support workshop to enabling five start-ups from Western Switzerland to benefit from designers’ skills during four consecutive evenings. The perceptions of the five start-up managers about design awareness were assessed before and after the workshop. Therefore, the results of this publication concern the impact of the design support workshop on the design awareness of start-up managers. In this paper design awareness concept was considered according to (1) areas of design impact (2) the value of design and (3) the roles expected from designers. The workshop programme appears to be effective in enhancing (a) the perception of design impact in the field of customer orientation; (b) the perceived value that design can bring to assist in decision-making and developing strategic directions and (c) the different roles expected of designers by start-up managers.

Summary:

In this paper, we present the design process of a smart bracelet that aims at enhancing the life of elderly people. The bracelet acts as a personal assistant during the user's everyday life, monitoring the health status and alerting him or her about abnormal conditions, reminding medications and facilitating the everyday life in many outdoor and indoor activities.
