Summary:
Introduction: Fragility hip fractures represent a significant public health problem, with profound consequences on mobility and functionality
in older adults, frequently resulting in institutionalization and dependence on community care services. Rehabilitation programs are crucial for
promoting independence in older adults, preventing deterioration of overall health status, and consequently reducing costs associated with
prolonged care, hospital readmissions, and complications related to fragility fractures. Despite evidence suggesting that rehabilitation programs
implemented in community settings benefit functional recovery following fragility hip fracture, available information remains scarce, dispersed,
and poorly structured.
Objective: The aim of this scoping review is to map the characteristics of rehabilitation programs, specifically exercise programs, implemented in
community settings and directed towards older adults aged 65 years or older following fragility hip fracture.
Methods: The review process will follow the scoping review methodology of the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). A comprehensive literature search
will be conducted to identify published and unpublished studies from database inception to the present day. Databases to be searched include:
MEDLINE (PubMed), CINAHL Ultimate (EBSCOhost), Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Scopus, JBI Evidence-Based Practice Database,
PEDro, Epistemonikos, and websites of relevant fragility fracture organizations. Additionally, reference lists of selected articles and grey literature
will be screened. No language restrictions will be applied. Study selection and data extraction will be performed independently by two reviewers,
with a third reviewer consulted to resolve any disagreements.
Results: Results will be presented in tabular format accompanied by narrative description, organized according to research questions. Findings
will highlight healthcare professionals involved, program characteristics and interventions according to the FITT-VP framework, and evaluated
outcomes.
Conclusion: This protocol describes the methodology for a scoping review that will synthesize and organize knowledge on community-based
rehabilitation programs, specifically exercise programs, directed towards older adults following fragility hip fracture.
