Construction methods in the West, since the Middle Ages, are above all a cultural phenomenon. Borromini, Ledoux, Viollet le Duc, then Mies, Perriand, Aalto and Gropius, have all developed a unique culture of construction. Contemporary architects such as Bruther, Juaçaba, Gang all have their own language of matter and know how to express ideas through the manufacture of architectural matter. All have drawn on history to develop the discourse that has allowed them to create their works.
Beyond standards and regulations, construction must be thought of as its own grammar. It follows its own rules, oscillating between technique and artistic expression, and allows the material to vibrate to give it meaning.
