Description du projet : The Swiss Competence Center on Supply of Electricity (SCCER-SoE) has been established in November 2013 to develop fundamental research and innovative solutions in the domains of GeoEnergies (Deep Geothermal Energy and CO2 sequestration) and HydroPower. In its first two years of implementation, SCCER-SoE has built a true national competence center, with research and cooperation partners from the ETH schools and research centers, six Universities, three UAS, key industry partners, federal offices and services. The SCCER-SoE focus has been on sustainable competence expansion, by establishing new professorships and research positions, on international cooperation, on building new technology platforms, laboratories and testing facilities, on working with industry to design 10-year roadmaps for Deep-Geothermal Energy, Carbon Capture and Sequestration and Hydro-power, aiming at delivering substantial progress towards meeting the challenges of the Energy Strategy 2050. In Phase II, 2017-2020, the SCCER-SoE will continue with the implementation of the innovation roadmaps, the development of integrative solutions, testing and installation of innovative technologies, technology assessment and scenario modelling. It will expand the focus on pilot and demonstration projects, conducted with industry partners, to validate the technologies and proposed solutions; seven pilot and demonstration projects will be pursued in Phase II, covering the whole portfolio of technologies and energy sources of SCCER-SoE.

Autonomous research drone for avalanche victims - GRS-017/19

Description du projet : Our project team aims at developing an autonomous avalanche victims research drone for professional mountain rescuers. We want to give them a new and more efficient tool based on the avalanche beacon technology they commonly use. During an avalanche intervention, time is the most critical variable. We thus want to design a drone which ticks this crucial box. Using a machine for the research also reduces the rescuers exposition to risks they bear to save people. We want this drone to be simple and intuitive to use to ease the rescuers' work. We aim to equip two different main players in the mountain rescue chain - the ski resorts due to their proximity with the avalanche zones and the professional companies of mountain rescue such as Air-Glaciers or the SAS/REGA as they are always involved in avalanche rescue. A prototype is expected for this winter season and we want to launch sales for the first functional product in the winter 2020/21. As a future development, we also imagine a smaller drone that skiers / hikers could carry in their backpacks as a flying avalanche beacon. This product would however only be a second version of the current project. Our main expected business outcomes are: ' Swiss Mountain Award 2019, innovation prize given by the Association of Remontées Mécaniques Suisses ' Raising of financial funds for the R&D and the commercial strategy 2019/20 ' Running of 2 successful beta-tests with the ski resorts of Verbier and Chamonix 2020/21 ' International promotion of the final product during the CISA-IKAR Convention 2020 ' Sales launching of the final product in the winter 2020/21 (6 units targeted) ' Sales of 15 units in Switzerland and Europe in the winter 2021/22 05 STATE OF THE ART ' What is the applied research base of your business project? What have you achieved so far in your Bachelor/Master thesis? What is your expertise brought to the project? Our project was first analyzed during the last year of our bachelor's degree in a business course of the School of Management from the HES-SO in Sierre. There, we worked on the development of the project from a business perspective to determine the potential market the project could target, a work which enabled us to win the Swiss Life Select grant at the end of the year 2017. Based on the general interest for the project, we worked on two Bachelor theses at the School of Engineering of Sion. The first one developed a software environment allowing to control and interface with an industrial drone developed by the world leader in the domain. The main objective was to offer the user on the ground an interface with the drone to make it perform autonomous missions and manage them. This thesis written by Jonathan Michel was supervised by Prof. Pierre- André Mudry which also accepted to participate to the current project. The second Bachelor thesis made by Vincent Bontempelli successfully tested three different search algorithms based on a numerical model of a drone coupled with avalanche transceiver technology. This work was based on several previous works dealing with the same subject. In 2010, Manuel Grauwiler and Luc Oth at ETHZ worked during the Alcedo project on an autonomous air micro-vehicle for avalanche research during their Bachelor thesis at the ETHZ. In that project, their drone was able to find a first AVD signal but not the source of it because of disturbances by the drone's electronic1. Matteo Ragni at the university of Trento in 20142 then studied the reliability of an autonomous avalanche victim research drone. In his work, Ragni especially suggested the idea of a recast of the AVD technology to adapt it to an autonomous drone research. After the completion of the two bachelor theses, the team spent two months combining the two projects. Description du projet : The major aim to develop and construct a demonstrator robot platform (the Envirobot) that samples and measures a set of relevant water quality parameters in surface water bodies by the incorporation of optical, physical, chemical and biological sensors. The Envirobot is invented to perform autonomous surveying or autonavigation. The second major aim of the project consists in particular in the development and incorporation of a range of biological sensors useful for both functioning modes of the Envirobot.

Description du projet : Le projet EnergyBox développe un framework IoT (Internet of Things) banalisé pour le déploiement de services. Le framework permet l'hébergement de plusieurs services indépendants les uns des autres mais qui toutefois peuvent partager l'accès à certains capteurs répartis. Le framework dénommé cloud.iO (http:/cloudio.hevs.ch) est composé d'une partie cloud avec des services d'annuaire, de gestion des droits et de stockage des valeurs historiques, ainsi que d'une partie répartie, basée sur une plate-forme offrant un environnement autonome virtualisé à chaque service hébergé. Les développements réalisés ont été utilisés avec succès pour des projets pilote dans le domaine de la gestion énergétique des bâtiments.

Description du projet : The consortium behind the SEMIAH project aims to pursue a major technological, scientific and commercial breakthrough by developing a novel and open ICT infrastructure for the implementation of automated Demand Response (DR) in households so as to enable shifting energy consumption from high energy-consuming loads to off-peak periods with high generation of electricity from Renewable Energy Sources (RES). The project's innovative approach is based on the development of an open ICT framework that will promote a generic environment for the deployment and innovation of smart grid services in households. A DR service based on novel and cutting-edge aggregation, forecasting and scheduling techniques will be developed and validated on this infrastructure. The consortium will furthermore integrate security and privacy functions in all the elements of SEMIAH to ensure that the system cannot be compromised. Finally, the consortium will develop new business models for electricity players and residential customers to quantify costs and benefits for all players in the value chain. SEMIAH will provide benefits to residential customers, energy utilities and the society, through lower electricity bills, reduced waste of RES and higher stability of the grid; by enabling savings in CO2 emissions and fuel costs; and by reducing investments in network expansion and peak generation plants. In order to achieve project objectives and the projected impacts, a strong and determined consortium has been assembled around the technological skills and competencies needed to overcome the identified challenges. The team of 12 partners from 4 different European countries, coming from ICT (AU, CSEM, UIA and HES-SO), Energy (Fraunhofer, AEnergi, SEIC, ENALP, MIS and Develco) and Telecommunications (DEVO and NetPlus), jointly possess excellence in skills and requirements needed to drive this ambitious project to successful result.

Description du projet : En 2012, la puissance mondiale installée dans le domaine de la petite hydraulique était estimée approximativement à 75 GW, représentant plus de 7% de la capacité hydraulique totale. Le potentiel mondial est estimé à 173 MW. En Suisse en 2010, il y avait déjà plus de 1300 petites centrales hydroélectriques en fonctionnement pour une capacité installée de 859 MW représentant plus de 5% de la production d'électricité du pays. La mise hors service progressive des centrales nucléaires en Suisse nécessite l'installation de nouveaux moyens de production d'électricité. Le potentiel de la petite hydraulique est évalué à 1,3-1,6 TWh selon l'OFEN. L'objectif de ce projet de développer une gamme de microturbines axiales pour récupérer l'énergie dissipée par les réducteurs de pression des réseaux d'eau potable Ce projet s'inscrit dans le cadre du projet SCCER 4 Supply of Electricity et du projet de recherche Hydro VS du programme The Ark Energy du canton du Valais.

Description du projet : L'objet de ce projet est de proposer une plateforme matérielle et logicielle intégrant différentes technologies existantes pour le monitoring d'évènements à l'aide de capteurs distribués et mobiles. Pour le réaliser, nous allons développer un gateway permettant de connecter différents capteurs environnementaux afin de les rendre accessibles sur le web. Nous développerons conjointement un data model permettant d'homogénéiser l'accès à ces capteurs par le biais de données sémantiques que nous rendrons disponibles au travers d'une API RESTful. Dans le contexte de la surveillance de foules, nous allons également proposer un ensemble de capteurs physiologiques portables permettant de surveiller de déterminer le niveau de stress de personnes clé, ce qui nous donnera une indication des évènements. Le coeur de ce projet sera ainsi une brique essentielle et modulaire pour le programme iNUIT, utilisé au départ pour les événements et, dans un second temps, étendu à la ville entière.

Description du projet : Réaliser le circuit driver permettant de faire des « flash » à des bandes de Leds infrarouge environ 30 fois par seconde. Le but est d'utiliser la caractéristique d'intensité peak sur 200us au lieu de DC (ici 160mA au lieu de 30mA). La latence du système doit être < 1ms entre la détection d'un front sur l'entrée digitale et la fin du flash de leds. L'HES fournit un prototype fonctionel et les documents nécessaire à sa mise en production.

Description du projet : " The goal of the project is to develop a prototype of an embedded heterogeneous high performance computation platform based on FPGAs, GPUs, and CPUs. Such platform will provide the possibility to execute a given task on the platform offering the better performances according to the tasks nature. We will mainly focus on the technical aspects concerning system setup and efficient data transmission between the different components of the system. At the end of the project we will present with a demonstrator of an embedded heterogenous computing platform running a real-world application. "

Description du projet : Les premiers produits connectables par WiFi arrivent sur le marché, mais ils souffrent de nombreu-ses limitations, telles l'impossibilité d'accès à une borne centrale ou ne disposant que d'une procé-dure d'identification peu robuste. Le projet Objet-WiFi explorent une voie plus autonome où le système embarqué s'adaptera plus facilement au type d'objet à connecter. Les travaux qui seront réalisés permettront une adaptation dynamique des ressources engagées pour le traitement d'une connexion WiFi, augmentant par voie de conséquence le temps d'utilisation des batteries.

Intelligent Self-describing Technical and Environmental Networks

Description du projet : W3C envisages the future of the Web to be a 'Semantic Web', which is an extended web of machine-understandable information and automated services that go far beyond current capabilities. The objective of this project is to tap these new possibilities for applications in the technical domain, especially to provide support for decision makers in a complex and continuously changing environment. This support is based on applying rules and process knowledge on available data published to the web. The data comprises measurements, human observations and design information. Data acquisition and process control is assisted by self-describing devices, e.g. measurement sensors or intelligent sub-systems, installed in the considered technical systems. The technology will be demonstrated by applications in the field of electro-technical systems, decentralised energy systems and environmental measurement systems. Dissemination will take place through the project web-site, presentation of papers and demonstrations given at conferences and workshops, provision of publicity material and a user group. The user group will be the starting point for exploitation by both the consortium members directly and by partnerships outside the consortium. The key standardisation task is to move the current generation of standards for design, engineering and process monitoring data to OWL ontologies, and thus make the appropriate data models available for semantic web technologies. Innovations provided by the project will comprise an ontology that enables a device to announce its existence, position in a network, and the services it provides. Also, the capturing of human qualitative observations and their publication on the web with respect to a formal ontology, as well as the development of rules that can be applied to any kind of technical data available on the web are key innovations. And finally the project will link two worlds up to now apart: STEP and OWL.

L'objectif général de ce projet est de s'affranchir d'un PC en offrant un système embarqué (portable, de petites dimensions, à bas prix) capable de mettre en relation deux périphériques informatiques. L'idée maîtresse est de remplacer un PC dans des gammes de fonctionnalités bien définies, tout en conservant les avantages des standards informatiques définis pour le monde PC.

Description du projet : Dans le cadre du réseau de compétencs EDiSoN (Embedded and Distributed Solutions Network)soutenu par la Confédération par l'intermédiaire du programme Soft[net], le groupe de compétences Infotronique pilote un projet de recherche et développement dans le domiane "web-enabled devices".
