Description du projet : « The best AI regulators may be movie writers » ' Tariq Krim, symposium « Assembling Intelligence », HEAD ' Genève, avril 2024 Ce projet de recherche artistique vise à explorer les modèles d'IA générative en matière de production vidéo.

The Journal of a Self-Improvement captures in four short videos the development of the character ƒ's coexistence with various smart companions and digital relatives: The episodes follow a precise dramaturgy: The optimisation of self-image for social media is followed by the search for recognition. The coaches use the opportunity of the self-optimisation craze to take overpower. Ultimately, ƒ becomes a servant to his AI-generated family. In Journal of a Self-Improvement, we encounter protective or lazy avatars and feel sympathy for the avatar who resists. The film is an experiment in developing new hybrid image and narrative spaces based on the interaction of actors and actants.

A philosophical and aesthetic anthropology of the case of ƒ, 2021. ‘Without a philosophy of nature, there is no philosophy of mankind.’ Helmut Plessner, Levels of Organic Life and the Human. An Introduction to Philosophical Anthropology Playing at Being Human proposes a videographic and philosophical rereading of the work of one of the founders of philosophical anthropology, who defined humans within the realm of the living, ultimately as organic beings. This philosophical approach is an effective theoretical tool that yields striking, original perspectives on the crisis of anthropocentrism, and which redefines the place occupied by humans and their capacities in relation to the non-human, living or technological. The piece fully activates Helmut Plessner’s thinking, but not merely by representing his concepts. It instead experiments with new hypotheses examined through a sense of play, thereby revealing the very close and symbiotic collaboration between the two artists and the philosopher. They question and enrich one another’s practices and tools in their joint elaboration of the films and text that make up this work.

Swissnex in Japan presents "Playing at Being Human," a philosophical-artistic experiment that examines the crisis of anthropocentrism by reimagining the relationship between humans and non-humans, both living and technical. This project challenges conventional perspectives by shifting the focus of human identity towards AI, animal, and plant life.

Zusammenfassung:

For the Your Own Spaces conference, we would like to propose both a screening and a

paper dealing with an experimentation based on a re-reading of the theory of the philosopher

Helmuth Plessner (1892-1985). Plessner’s concept of “excentric positionality” (exzentrische

Positionalität) designates a fundamental form of the understanding of human life in

its relationship to human’s animal body and to its surroundings. This relationship entails a

distance from oneself and a dynamic of spatialisation that presents a utopian dimension.

In the video ƒ in between the levels organic life, a human character, f, acts as an agent of

a specific perception, projection, and spatialisation. Trying to take the position of non-human

species through play, f points to other “positionalities”, animal and plant, and he activates

some of their parameters that he is able to share while being human.

f embodies this relationship in a particularly eloquent manner, to such an extent that he

asks viewers to consider image and the acting of the character through a specific perspective

Zusammenfassung:

This research began with the combination of an artistic method that uses an experimental agent, f, who draws attention and activates situations, with a rereading of the work of the philosopher Helmuth Plessner (1892-1985), who viewed humans in terms of their biological dimension and in spatial terms. By describing how a living body asserts itself within and outside its borders in the surrounding space, which Plessner termed positionality, the philosopher identified the various forms of vital relations between plants, animals, and humans, and he addressed the particularity of humans according to this fundamental principle of positionality. He thus defined the capacity of objectification and distancing from one’s own body as an excentric positionality typical of humans.

We used the artistic method that we termed “the anthropic performance” for this project to test hypotheses of new, possible types of excentring, both under the conditions of artificial intelligence and towards other forms of organic life, animal and plant. In cinematic terms the centrality of the body in the excentring experiments opened the way to new forms of subjectivity. It also expressed our wish to propose an aesthetic of the relations between humans, plants and animals, which we were able to de-hierarchise using the approach that we developed on the basis of Plessner’s philosophical anthropology.

Is there really no alternative to the answer of the crisis of the anthropocentrism that is developed within the posthumanism discourse?

For our presentation at Felt conference we would answer this question from the background of recent research that will be published end of the month under the title: “Playing at Being Human”. This research began with the combination of an artistic method that uses an experimental agent, f, who draws attention and activates situations, with a rereading of the work of the philosopher Helmuth Plessner (1892-1985), who viewed humans in terms of their biological dimension and in spatial terms. Zusammenfassung:

Boisseau and Westermeyer have developed a method where one of two filmmakers is part of the scene and appears side by side with other protagonists. The Agent Provocateur is not acting, but produces an effect on the situation and on the other protagonists through his presence. In their research project the artists - together with philosopher David Zerbib - will use this method to measure the positionality of the postmodern subject – referring to Plessner’s ex-centric positionality. Plessner’s oeuvre is relevant in relation to changes we undergo today: His concept of the ‘natural artificiality’ of the human offers a different slant on the digitization of our life. To understand reasons for human migration we should consider how Plessnerdescribes the human as the species which has future as its element. To aspire for something is not a privilege for few – it is the central force of human life.
