The anthropocene style
Buch ArODES

Zusammenfassung:

This manifesto, at the interface of architecture, aesthetics and engineering, calls for a return to the practical uses of interior decoration that were widespread before the 20th century. In the wake of fossil fuel–driven modernity, the efficiency of heating and air conditioning eclipsed the indoor climate–regulating functions of carpets, tapestries, curtains, mirrors and folding screens, relegating them to merely symbolic or aesthetic roles. However, given the urgent need in the Anthropocene epoch to reduce our energy consumption and CO2 emissions and stave off increasingly frequent and intense heat waves, we would be well advised to take advantage of the thermal value of decorative art again and reboot interior design, the spatial, formal and material configurations of our homes, with a view to optimizing climate-regulating performance. We call this 21st century functional and decorative aesthetic ‘the Anthropocene Style’.

Climatic architecture

Zusammenfassung:

Architecture and urbanism were traditionally based on climate and health, as we can read in the treatises of Vitruvius, Palladio or Alberti, where exposure to wind and sun, variations in temperature and humidity influenced the forms of cities and buildings. These fundamental causes of urban planning and buildings were ignored in the second half of the 20th century thanks to the enormous use of fossil energy by heating and air conditioning systems, pumps and refrigerators, that today cause the greenhouse effect and global warming.

The fight against climate change forces architects and urban designers to take seriously the climatic issue in order to base their design on its local climatic context and energy resources. Faced with the climatic challenge of the 21st century, Climatic Architecture proposes to reset our discipline on its intrinsic atmospheric qualities, where air, light, heat or humidity are recognized are real materials of building, convection, thermal conduction, evaporation, emissivity, or effusivity are becoming design tools for composing architecture and cities, and through materialism dialectic, are able to revolutionize esthetic and social values.

Decorative Arts in the Age of Global Warming
Buch ArODES

Philippe Rahm, Phi Nguyen

Zusammenfassung:

Today there is a conflict between the heritage and tourist value of an architecture, and its ecological and climatic value. Indeed, the end of the 20th century in Europe had valorized the visual, cultural, aesthetic aspect of the buildings, within the framework of a post-industrial economic development linked mainly to tourism. But when in the 21st century the imperatives of thermal insulation arrived, in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, a conflict arose between the historical image that the facade had to give in the public domain, and the need to cover it from the outside with a wool as thermal insulation. It is here that interior decoration takes on its full meaning, that of the carpets and tapestries of yesteryear, of chandeliers and mirrors, of gilding and curtains, as ancient strategies for improving the thermal conditions of pre-modern interiors, and whose ambition we must revalorize and renew the means in the age of global warming. Thus, by working on real climatic phenomena, the interior architecture students of the HEAD – Genève, under the direction of Philippe Rahm and Phi Nguyen, sought to respond to today's ecological imperatives, to bring the former tower of the Swiss Institute of Rome up to energy standards, by inventing the decorative style characteristic of the 21st century.

Architecture and urban design were traditionally based primarily on climate, comfort, and health issues, as can be seen in the treatises of Vitruvius or Alberti, which take into account wind and solar exposure, humidity and temperature rates, rain and fl ood contexts. These fundamental causes of architecture and urban design were largely ignored during the twentieth century because of the enormous use of fossil energy due to pumps, motors, fridges, heating systems and air-conditioning that have caused today’s greenhouse effect and global warming. The battle against climate change has forced architects and urban designers to place climatic issues high on their agenda once more. They must now reconsider the individual contexts in order to reduce the energy consumption of a building. But perhaps most importantly, through meteorological design architects today can re-imagine new ways of inhabiting space, new politics of the city, new human relationships, and a new type of aesthetic, which is more sensual and atmosphere-based. This book presents urban and architectural works by Philippe Rahm architectes from the past twelve years. Based on a strong scientifi c knowledge of physics, physiology, and meteorology—something that is clearly described in the book—the specifi c critical design approach of Philippe Rahm archi-tectes departs from the normalization and standardization of the usual sustainable architecture by proposing a constant diversity of atmospheres and a gradation of qualities of space that is open to interpretation of its inhabitants. The book itself has been designed to produce a gradation of sensations by various methods, including different types of paper, a diversity of visual and textual format and content—from academic to lyrical, theoretical to narrative—and a variation in intensity of the iconography, from schematic drawings to evocative photos.

Form follows climate about a meteorological park in Taiwan
Buch ArODES

Philippe Rahm

Zusammenfassung:

This publication is about the Jade Eco Park for the City of Taichung in Taiwan, an international landscape and architecture competition for a park of 67 hectares won by Philippe Rahm architectes, Mosbach paysagistes and Ricky Liu & Associates in 2011, with a construction completion in 2018. It presents original documents from the Detailed Design Phase completed in 2013 and some photographies of its construction. For Philippe Rahm architectes, Climate Change creates an opportunity to rethink architecture and urbanism with the climate in mind, to shift our focus away from a purely visual and functional approach towards one that is more sensitive, more attentive to the invisible, atmosphere-related aspects of space. Slipping from the solid to the void, from the visible to the invisible, from metric composition to thermal composition, architecture as “form and function follow climate” opens up additional, more sensual, more variable dimensions in which limits fade away and solids self-dissociate. The Jade Eco Park reveals how the climate can be at the base of a masterplan, adding sensorial qualities to the city at the same time as saving energy and meeting the objectives of Sustainability. The park’s design composition is based on climatic variations, from warmer to colder, from wet to dry, from polluted to cleaner, generating a diversity of microclimates and a multitude of different experiences open to the free will of the visitors. The park’s buildings are also based on climatic issues, by dissolving in separate layers the different climatic missions of the facade, towards sun, heat, rain and pollution. Philippe Rahm architectes purpose is to say that if today climate is the problem, climate can be also the solution, by basing the design on physics, by rethinking the architecture and the urbanization of a city from an atmospherical point of view, more ecological, providing new quality of life to the inhabitant, more comfortable, more sensual.

Atmosfere Costruite = Constructed Atmospheres
Buch ArODES

Philippe Rahm, Massimiliano Scuderi

2014,  Italy : Postmedia books,  128 p.

Link zur Publikation

Zusammenfassung:

The original vision on contemporary design and the encounter with other disciplines opens the architecture of Philippe Rahm to multiple possibilities. Constructed Atmospheres provides a selection of projects in which light, temperature, pressure, humidity, represent the 'brick' for a new discipline that can be defined by the term "meteorological design". Philippe Rahm's design is based on the principle that man faces reality from the inside and does not produce objects but atmospheres. The book provides a profile of the Swiss architect both as a theorist and as a designer, through the most recent works and a series of conversations conducted by Massimiliano Scuderi between 2011 and today. This book has been published with the support of Pro Helvetia.
