This paper presents the design and implementation of a digital control system for modular multilevel converters (MMC) and its use in a 5 kW small-scale prototype. To achieve higher system control reliability and multi-functionality, the proposed architecture has been built with an effective split of the control tasks between a master controller and six slave controllers, one for each of the six arms of the converter. The MMC prototype has been used for testing both converter and system-level controls in a reduced-scale laboratory set up of a Multi-Terminal DC transmission network (MTDC). The whole control has been tested to validate the proposed control strategies. The tests performed at system level allowed exploration of the advantages of using an MMC in a MTDC system.

The increasing interest in Hybrid Electric Vehicles led to the study of new powertrain structures. In particular, it was demonstrated in the technical literature how series architecture can be more efficient, compared to parallel one, if supercapacitors are used as storage system. Since supercapacitors are characterized by high efficiency and high power density, but have low specific energy, storage sizing is a critical point with this technology. In this study, a detailed analysis on the effect of supercapacitor storage sizing on series architecture was carried out. In particular, in series architecture, supercapacitor storage sizing influences both engine number of starts and the energy that can be stored during regenerative braking. The first aspect affects the comfort, whereas the second aspect directly influences powertrain efficiency. Vehicle model and Energy Management System were studied and simulations were carried out for different storage energy, in order to define the optimal sizing.

In an applied research project on the development of a pulsed microwave sulfur lamp prototype of 1 kW, we have discovered an amazing phenomenon in which the plasma forms a ball staying at the center of the bulb despite gravity, thus protecting the glass from melting. In this paper, it is shown that this results from an acoustic resonance in a spherical mode. Measurements of the plasma response to short pulses are presented showing beats at the spherical resonance. It is demonstrated that the beats could result from the simultaneous excitation of two normal modes with a frequency difference of approximately 1%. One of the two frequencies matches precisely the microwave pulses repetition, a little below 30 kHz. Thus this one is due to a forced oscillation, whereas the other one is due to a free oscillation. The phase velocity of sound was calculated as a function of temperature in order to find the series of temperatures at which a resonance would occur if the bulb were an isothermal solid sphere. The mean temperature inside the actual bulb was determined from the only doublet of this series, that has characteristic frequencies close enough to cause the observed beats. In addition, one of these two modes has a spherical symmetry that can explain the plasma ball formation. The obtained mean temperature is consistent with the direct measurements on the bulb surface as well as with the temperature in the core of a similar plasma found in the literature. We have also proposed a model of the resonance onset based on the acoustic dispersion and the sound amplification due to electromagnetic coupling.

This paper presents the implementation and the experimental validation of the speed controller, without position measurement, of an active way linear synchronous motor with multiphase independent supply. The proposed method is based on the back electromotive force estimation. The main drawback of this strategy is that it does not work at standstill. This paper also presents a second contactless method that, by making use of Hall sensors, allows starting the glider from standstill. These two methods have been implemented on a prototype, to demonstrate the feasibility of the speed control of the active way linear motor without position measurement cables.

In this paper, an active way linear synchronous motor with multiphase independent supply is presented. A proof-of-concept prototype of the proposed linear motor has been built, including power electronics and control. The control is based on a multi digital signal processor (multi DSP) master-slave structure. The controller design and the power and control boards have been described. The analytical model of the motor is presented. The analytical results are compared with a finite-element simulation, showing a good agreement. The analytical model has been also used to implement a dynamic model of the whole system in the Matlab/Simulink/Plecs simulation environment. The proof-of-concept prototype has been fully tested with one and two independent gliders. The obtained experimental results show that the chosen multi DSP master-slave structure allows the control of the proposed linear motor with good performances and reasonable costs.
