Zusammenfassung:

Despite decades of prevention, tobacco addiction is still a widespread health concern responsible for around 8 million deaths per year. Existing digital smoking cessation solutions such as social media are becoming increasingly popular and represent a novel approach to find community support. However, little is known about how they affect smoking behavior. This research aims to understand what motivates people to join online communities and how their participation affects their attitudes and behaviors. To do so, this article conducts an in-depth analysis of the popular Reddit r/StopSmoking thread through three complementary studies. Using the transtheoretical model and the uses and gratification theory, Study 1 aims at understanding the link among motivation factors, engagement, and outcomes through a user survey. Study 2 aims at understanding the engagement by analyzing the content of 10 years of user interaction data. Study 3 attempts to gain further knowledge of interactions by examining the reaction of the community to a crisis situation such as that of the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Findings convey the fact that participation in such communities has a favorable impact on the change process toward quitting. Results show that providing social support to others is the biggest contributing factor for participating in the community. User interactions analysis confirmed that survey responses were accurate reflections of actual user activity. Regarding the impact of the COVID-19 crisis, results suggest that it increased levels of stress and depression in the community while decreasing active engagement, indicating that there may be opportunities for improvement in dealing with tough situations.

Zusammenfassung:

Preventing addictive behaviors among teenagers is a crucial mission of public health organizations and public education institutions. However, it is chal-lenging to design effective and portable interventions for classroom settings. This research evaluates the effects of a novel classroom intervention called Escape Addict. Escape Addict is a digital escape room learning activity that aims to prevent, and raise awareness of, addictive and risky behav-iors. We conducted a controlled field experiment with 10 classes surveyed before (N = 202 pupils) and after (N = 199 pupils) the intervention, as well as 20 semi-structured interviews. Our results measured three weeks after the intervention show that Escape Addict significantly increased knowledge by 10%. Escape Addict also enabled pupils talk about addictions and risky be-haviors. The intervention had no major effect on risk perceptions and other behaviors. However, Escape Addict had heterogeneous effects. For instance, those pupils who enjoyed the intervention more, played fewer video games afterwards. Also, the effect on knowledge acquisition was stronger for pupils with higher educational achievement. Gender had limited effect. Our find-ings provide overall support that digital escape rooms represent interesting platforms to convey prevention messages in a compelling way.

Zusammenfassung:

Computational thinking (CT) skills are becoming increasingly relevant for future professionals across all domains, beyond computer science (CS). As such, an increasing number of bachelor's and master's programs outside of the CS discipline integrate CT courses within their study program. At the same time, tools such as notebooks and interactive apps designed to support the teaching of programming concepts are becoming ever more popular. However, in non-CS majors, CT might not be perceived as essential, and students might lack the motivation to engage with such tools in order to acquire solid CT skills. This article presents a field study conducted with 115 students during a full semester on a novel computational notebook environment. It evaluates computational notebooks and CT skills in an introductory course on information technology for first-year undergraduates in business and economics. A multidimensional evaluation approach makes use of pre- and post-test surveys, lectures, and self-directed laboratory sessions tracking analytics. Our findings suggest that, in the process of learning CT for non-CS students, engagement in active learning activities can be a stronger determinant of learning outcomes than initial knowledge. Furthermore, gamifying computational notebooks can serve as a strong driver of active learning engagement, even more so than initial motivational factors.

Zusammenfassung:

While users are increasingly embracing smartphones worldwide, these devices, storing our most personal information, are repeatedly found to be leaking users’ data. Despite various atte mpts to inform users of these privacy issues, they continue to adopt risky behaviors. In order to better protect users of these devices, we need to understand the antecedents of the decision to install potentially privacy-threatening applications on them. We ran a large experiment in order to determine the influence of privacy risks literacy on the intent to install a potentially privacy threatening application on a smartphone. Using partial least squares (PLS), we were able to find that more than the privacy risks literacy, it is the coping behavior literacy that influences the user’s decision to install a mobile application. These findings are relevant to help determine a course of action in order to increase the user’s privacy protection when using such devices.

Zusammenfassung:

In the realm of knowledge transmission, organizations face the challenge of finding effective strategies to engage individuals and facilitate knowledge transfer. Traditional methods often fall short, failing to capture individuals’ attention and ignite their motivation to actively participate in the knowledge transmission process. This article introduces Colearnis, a novel knowledge transmission platform, which allows peers to transfer knowledge in a gamified manner by using videos and quizzes which are directly created by the employees. This article also presents a long-term field study investigating the use of Colearnis with 130 employees in a worldwide metallurgy and tooling company. A multi-dimensional evaluation approach makes use of user surveys and behavior-tracking data to explore prospective avenues which might benefit knowledge transmission. Users have been profiled under demographical and managerial aspects, however also under their gamification user types according to the Hexad framework for gamification design. This study explores the connections between user profiles and engagement behaviors within Colearnis. The findings suggest that factors such as; age influence the achiever and philanthropist user types, however also that individuals with greater managerial duties are more likely to be classified as socializer, free-spirit, or philanthropist user types. Additionally, this study suggests that socializer or disruptor user types are more likely to consume or react to peers’ self-created knowledge. On the other hand, achiever user profiles are less likely to react or start quizzes. These findings equip organizations with valuable insights to further design and implement engaging ad-hoc knowledge transmission systems. These systems could be further tailored to align with individuals’ managerial profiles and gamification user types, optimizing engagement and increasing the likelihood of successful knowledge transmission.

Zusammenfassung:

Over one in ten babies are born preterm annually, presenting challenges beyond the neonatology intensive care unit (NICU), including depression and post-traumatic stress for parents. Research has demonstrated that tailored interventions supporting parents transitioning from NICU to home can decrease these adverse outcomes. Parents often seek online answers for children’s health before consulting medical professionals. Smartphone applications (apps) supporting parents are being increasingly developed, however, the literature suggests that current apps lack quality and credibility. This study offers a methodical assessment of the quality, level of evidence-based content, and data protection of apps aiming to support parents of premature infants in their transition from NICU to home. The web-based application aggregator Appagg was used to list free and paid Android and iOS apps using keywords such as NICU, preterm, discharge and parenting support in English and in French. The apps were evaluated between March and July 2023. Quality was evaluated using the Mobile Application Rating Scale (MARS) to measure engagement, functionality, aesthetics and information. Then, this study suggests an evidence-based content (EBC) assessment based on the most recent recommendations, guidelines, and scientific literature regarding NICU discharge for premature infants. Finally, the apps’ data protection was evaluated in regards to compliance with the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or GDPR-like regulation. The search yielded a total of 896 unique apps. Screening for title and abstract selected 22 apps. 12 remained for final analysis as 9 were not accessible to Switzerland or needed patient ID for access and one did not work (video content was not working at all). The results showed that three apps (3/12, 25%) received a good MARS score on overall quality (>4.0 out of 5.0), five apps (5/12, 42%) presented good levels of EBC assessment (≥4 out of 5) and four apps (4/12, 33%) were explicitly compliant to at least one data protection standard (≥4 out of 5).

Zusammenfassung:

Digital maturity models (DMM) aim to measure the current level of a company’s digitalization, as well as providing a path towards digital maturity. While many DMMs exist, several challenges surround their application for small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) that would ben the process on their own. The aim of this paper is to describe the development and the evaluation of a tool that assist SMEs with their digital transformation, from the maturity assessment to the setup of a systematic digital transformation roadmap. Following a Design Science Research approach, we elucidated the needs of SME managers regarding digital maturity through interviews (n=10). Then, we developed and evaluated a DMM integrated within an online tool through focus groups (n=3). We finally evaluated our tool in the context of six SME digital transformation initiatives. Our findings highlight that SME managers need prescriptions about digital maturity rather than a sole description of their organization’ maturity stage. Evaluations show good results in terms of utility and validity. Moreover, a need for a more complete and specialized recommendation service was highlighted which pave the way for future research.

Zusammenfassung:

The continuous specialization of the organization’s activities towards its core competencies (Prahalad and Hamel 2000) and the adoption of digital business strategies (Bharadwaj et al. 2013) results in the emergence of a new type of cross-organizational business process. In the past few decades, cross-organizational business processes were reduced to their communication and coordination aspects (Scheckenbach 1997), without the need for real process ownership (Hirschmann 1998). Nowadays, digitalization across organizational borders brings brand new issues when it comes to inter-organizational information collection. Researchers have studied the technical and organizational issues around cross-boundary information sharing, mainly in the public sector (Pardo et al. 2006; Ramon Gil-Garcia et al. 2007). However, the collecting of information resulting from a cross-organizational business process lacking a designated process owner can be very difficult. This paper addresses this issue by presenting a three-part evaluation framework dedicated to assessing data collection initiatives across organizations.

Zusammenfassung:

Metal conservators confronted with unknown artefacts rely on previous literature to develop treatment protocols. This search can be tedious given the dissemination of information across corpus of unstructured texts, mainly in the form of research papers and semi-structured databases of artefacts. In order to improve the search of artefacts sharing similar characteristics (metal composition and structure, conservation condition, etc.), this project proposes a hybrid search engine based on a domain ontology. Using a database populated with information resulting from comprehensive investigations of historic and archaeological artefacts, we extracted and selected key concepts and their relations through the use a various lexical analysis tools. Based on this corpus and frequency analysis, we were able to build an ontology of the domain, opening new perspective on information retrieval. Conservators are able to leverage the power of the hybrid search engine to compare their observations on a specific artefact with objects already stored in the database or with indexed research papers. Using keywords to describe corrosion forms they are confronted with, conservators can retrieve artefacts showing similar corrosion phenomena and assess the conservation condition of their artefacts, e.g. diagnosing the stability of metals or determining the location of the limit of the original surface in corrosion product crusts.
