Digital Twin (DT) concepts are essential for 'Industry 4.0' and the digitalisation of manufacturing processes. Benefits have clearly been demonstrated with huge potential for manufacturers.
However, adoption is slow, especially amongst SMEs. The mirroring that creates the digital representation of the physical process is not trivial. Current implementations are tailor made for each specific process.
Furthermore, the benefits only become significant once an 'Artificial Intelligence' uses the DT past and current states, together with other data, to optimize the process. The output of this optimization can then be feed back into the real system, closing the loop towards further optimization.
We need a generic DT solution with real-time mirroring and optimization.
